Brands Hatch played host to the sixth round of the iRacing.com Skip Barber Racing School Premier Series. For the first time in the series? young history, the virtual site of the online racing was outside the United States, which may have given a competitive edge to some of the European drivers. Indeed, many series regulars on the circuit decided to take the first round of racing overseas off, and elected to use this week as a drop week in points. However, 55 other sim-racers eagerly sought the opportunity to pick-up points at Brands Hatch and improve their positions in the overall standings. For the past three months, Club Florida?s Christian Aranha has firmly planted his name at the top of the overall standings, making it pretty clear he has no [...]

This Season for the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) is off and rolling, and it rolled right into quite possibly the toughest oval track in the world for Week Two of the twelve week season. The famed Darlington Speedway is known for its rough and tumble racing, and this week did not disappoint. Making laps around the 1.366 mile, one groove, egg of a track is hard enough when practicing all alone, add 30+ cars into the mix and you have a recipe for mayhem. As to be expected, the yellow flag was out early and often in the majority of races and drivers struggled to find any grip or room to race. Even the best setup slips and slides all over the place, which is why experience always [...]

After the 500 laps–well, if the rain stays away–of the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 are completed this Sunday at Martinsville Speedway, the Sprint Cup Series will have its first weekend off of the season before heading to Texas Motor Speedway for the first Saturday night race of the year. Three-time V8 Supercars champion Craig Lowndes reckons Casey Stoner could make a successful transition to the Australian touring car series if he chose to do so. Stoner announced on Thursday that he would retire from MotoGP at the end of the 2012 season, after just seven years at the sport's top level. The 2007 and '11 MotoGP title-winner tested Lowndes' V8 series Triple Eight Holden last winter, impressing Lowndes, and acknowledged during his MotoGP retirement announcement that he was open to racing in V8s in the longer-term future.

I hope you’re ready for Danica-mania again, because it’s going to be in full effect this Saturday night at Darlington. The Sprint Cup drivers will run at least 367 laps in the race this weekend for the Bojangles Southern 500. There’s only one race here per season (as of 2005), so there’s not as much [...]

2011 Volkswagen Jetta interior

There was a lot of built-up excitement surrounding the larger and less costly 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, but the anticipation deflated among critics when the model's less-than-impressive interior was revealed to the world. Critics chided the cheapened cabin, and quite a few negative reviews followed.

It's tough to argue that in the process of its upsizing, the Jetta's interior wasn't downgraded with lesser plastics and trim. The 2012 Passat does a much better job in this regard, but even then there are some areas where it feels like cost has been taken out of the cabin. But none of that is apparently enough to stop designer Jae Min from taking issue with these characterizations. Ward's Automotive reports that VW's chief U.S. designer claims that the Jetta and Passat interiors were not the victims of cost-cutting. Min claims that the money was simply re-purposed, with money shifting "from here to there." The designer went on to add that the automaker was able to lower the starting price of both vehicles in part because of more flexible vehicle architectures and shifting production from Germany to the States.

While Min sounds convinced that no pennies were pinched, we're not so sure - unless when he says money was shifted "from here to there" he means "from where you can see and feel to where you can't." Regardless of what we think, one statistic is impossible to argue: Jetta sales have shot up 43.9 percent this year and Passat sales have skyrocketed by 80.9 percent. That, ladies and gentlemen, is letting the numbers do the talking.

Volkswagen designer claims no cost was taken out of Jetta, Passat interiors originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 May 2012 10:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Round Two of the iRacing.com V8 Supercars Series presented by BigPond took the teams and drivers to the famous Watkins Glen International which is a 4km in length. With race one controversy out of the way it was time to get ready for the main race. ANZ Motorsports Scott McLaughlin would take the pole with a blistering 1:10.816 getting his first pole position in the main event with Rens Broekman second, making these two sim-racers the only two into the eights. George Maris would take third with Richard Hamstead and Mitchell McLeod only .02 behind. When the lights went green, Broekman?s car was nowhere to be seen as Internet trouble saw his race over before it had even started. With Broekman a no show it was McLaughlin having a nice [...]

Lewis Hamilton produced an 'extraordinary' performance in the Spanish Grand Prix to charge from the back of the grid to finish eighth, reckons his team boss Martin Whitmarsh. The Briton was excluded from qualifying after a mistake in the garage meant he did not have enough fuel to complete an in-lap and provide a petrol sample after taking pole position . Despite the setback, Hamilton executed a well-judged two-stop strategy that Whitmarsh thinks will silence those who suggest the former world champion is too aggressive.

Travis Pastrana's race wasn't perfect, but he'll take it.

The motocross and X-Games star finished 22nd in his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut Friday night at Richmond International Raceway. While he was disappointed at a pit road speeding penalty under green that relegated him two laps down, he said he was happy about the finish.

"I think the lowlight was having to go through pit road twice," Pastrana said after the race about his pass-through penalty as a result of that speeding violation. "It was my first pit under green and I definitely got a little excited."

"But I expected to do worse. I hoped to do better. I think we can run top 20, I believe we were in the top 20 for a bit of the race in the middle until I messed up the pit area, but I'm happy."

Pastrana was locked into the race by virtue of Pastrana Waltrip Racing's alliance with RAB Racing, which had previously fielded cars for Kenny Wallace and Ryan Truex this season. He started 25th.

His next race is at Darlington in two weeks. Wallace will be behind the wheel at Talladega.

The moment that Malaysian carmaker DRB-Hicom took control of Lotus in April, rumors were born that Lotus’s fifth owner was looking for a sixth. It is exceptionally rare for Bernie Ecclestone to be shown the yellow flag when it comes to his Formula One business dealings, but that's what happened with two of his projects. A month ago, Ecclestone agreed to terms with France's sports minister David Douillet to reinstate the French Grand Prix at the Paul Ricard circuit (which Ecclestone happens to own). The contract hadn't been signed while minor details were settled, but the plan was that the French GP would alternate with the Belgian GP starting in 2013.

However, with the defeat of French president Nicolas Sarkozy and the election of François Hollande, new reports suggest that everything from the previous regime will come under review. And it seems unlikely that Hollande, who was voted in by taxpayers who wanted more for their money and their economic pain, will agree to have the state subsidize the race. Said the president-elect, "I do not think the French state should be responsible for any financial outlay. There are enough issues to consider without spending tens of millions of euros on a grand prix."

And across the world in Singapore, the GP is safe but the planned F1 Initial Public Offering in the nation-state now has a question mark after it. The squalls in the market that have depressed stock markets everywhere have IPO insiders cautious on the endeavor. Word is that they'll see how the imminent Facebook IPO fares and how the market responds before making a decision. There is also the matter of the Mercedes-Benz not having signed the Concorde Agreement, and Daimler says it needs to get that settled before F1 can go public. According to Reuters, if the offering isn't conducted by June then it - and the estimated $2 billion it is expected to raise - might have to wait until next year.

Yellow-Flagged: Formula One's French Grand Prix and IPO potentially on hold originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 13:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
